Strawberry Diary

Strawberry on her second day

May 6 to May 10, 2009 - When Strawberry first came to the ranch she didn’t look good at all. She was as skinny as can be, and had cuts all over. Just looking at her made me almost want to cry. Surprisingly, even after all she had been through, she was still very loving and easy to work with. Once she arrived we gave her lots of loving and reassurance. Then we gave her a good long brushing and bathed her to get all of her loose hair out. We also sprayed wound spray over all her cuts. Later in the week Dr. Partridge gave Strawberry a vet check and had her blood work done. He found she was severely anemic (low in iron) and had a slight infection. To our surprise all of her organs are fine. She was also dewormed.

Strawberry getting her long coat cleaned up

May 11 - May 17, 2009 - Strawberry looked like a different horse this week. She has been eating like there is no tomorrow and her coat has already got some shine to it. We gave her another bath and brushed her down again. Eric Billingsly pulled her shoes and did the first phase of trimming her feet back to normal. Her legs are sore but her feet look very healthy and strong. Strawberry is now off quarantine and was moved to a bigger stall. It also seems like she’s got some of her personality back. Her wounds have already scabbed over and are healing nicely.

May 18 - 24, 2009 - Strawberry keeps getting better every week. We brushed her down again and picked her hooves. She has almost shed all of her loose hair and has gained a lot of muscle back. Dr. Mausling did her dental work and only had to pull one molar because of overgrowth. Besides not being done for quite a while her teeth looked good. Also the color has come back into her gums and her anemia is disappearing rapidly. From now on out it is all about eating for Strawberry. She is well on her way to a complete recovery.

May 25 - May 31, 209 - This week Strawberry looked pretty good. It seems like the discharge coming from her eyes earlier in the month has stopped. Her ribs are still showing a bit but not much. We picked her hooves and groomed her again.

June 1 - June 6, 2009 - Strawberry looks so much different from when she first arrived at the ranch. She also has a way different personality. She was getting a little rowdy after just staying in her stall for a few weeks. So we took her for a walk down the street and exercised her a little. We even got her to trot for a while. She has gained so much muscle in the last few weeks, and you can’t even really see her ribs anymore(or feel them eitherJ). Once again we picked her hooves and brushed her down. We also stretched her out a little. She is still stiff in her back legs but that’s nothing that can’t be fixed. Besides that she is looking amazing.

Week 6- Today we put Strawberry in the turnout. She immediately ran over to the fence to greet the other horses. We also exercised her a bit by running her around the property. Strawberry is lookin pretty awesomeJ!  It’s just a matter of time before she finds her perfect family.

Week 7- I swear every single time I see Strawberry her tummy gets lower to the ground. She has gained so much weight and muscle since she arrived. This week Strawberry got her feet done. We saddled her up and rode her around a little. She was pretty good. She is the best horse for any type of rider. She is able to adjust quickly to any type of riding style. This week we stretched her out and exercised her as well. We also rinsed her off after riding and brushed her down.

Week 8

Strawberry looked great this week!! I ran her around for quite a while and she didnt even break a sweat! I think i got more of a workout than she did:). Her legs are starting to loosen up as well. She is looking better than she ever was.

Week 9 - This week Shawnee and I took Strawberry for a little ride. She is alot less stiff in her back legs since she arrived. Her limp is disappearing as well. She is one amazing girl!

Week 10(closure)- This week we took Strawberry to her new forever home. Before we left Bill's the vet came to microchip her. That looked extremely painfull!!! The needle was about half the size of my hand!!  After that I loaded her into the trailer and we drove Strawberry to her new owner. Once we got there we were greeted by an excited little girl named Amanda. She is now the proud owner of Strawberry. i know for a fact Strawbery will get all the love she deserves and more at her new home. I'm very excited for her !!!!!!!
